Much of what matters in consultation happens in the space between two people. Before any plan is written or any recommendation made, there is a conversation, and in that conversation Manuela is listening for more than symptoms. She is listening for you, for how you are holding what has happened, for what frightens you and what you hope for, for the shape of the life this illness has interrupted.
There is the disease, what the scans and stages and protocols describe, the biology of what is happening in the body, and there is the illness, the lived experience of it, what it is to be the person moving through their days changed by it. Medical treatment attends to the disease, as it must. Here, the illness comes first, and the person living it.
Healing rarely moves in a straight line, and the weeks between appointments allow care to be adjusted to the person you are on that day, rather than the person you were when you first sat down. Nothing is fixed in advance and imposed. What emerges is a shared understanding, revised gently over time, held between you and Manuela together.
To be a patient here is to be accompanied. You are not handed a programme and sent away with it. You are walked alongside, at your pace, with your own knowledge and values honoured as part of the care rather than set aside by it.
